The Stowaways - Demo
Reviewed by Helen on 3rd August 2008
The Stowaways have sent me two demos. The first was quiet and unassuming, which can be lovely - but it was a little too quiet and unassuming. I put it to one side, and I'm glad I did, because they sent me another which is a lot more impressive.

This band is very hard to describe, and especially hard to compare to other bands. There's a touch of The Strokes in there and more than a touch of Moldy Peaches, but it's hard to pinpoint exactly where. There's this amazing delicacy in every aspect of every track with guitar riffs that sound like kittens are frolicking on the strings with baby rabbits on the drums and cupid draping flowers and ribbons everywhere. Then on top of that, there's a thick layer of nostalgic bohemian summer. Whoever picked out the soundtrack for Juno really missed a trick here.
I recommend checking out The Stowaways, just too see what you think. I'm not entirely sure yet, and I've listened to the latest demo they sent several times. I do sort of feel that if you're a small band you need a big voice, but The Stowaways' small voice seems to work well enough. I'm afraid I probably wouldn't want to see them live, though. This is a band to listen to in the bath, or when sitting on a grassy hill watching the stars.

Thanks! I couldn't find these guys anywhere. Pretty much a "Google-Proof" name, especially with a self-titled EP.
