Hey Edison - Dancing in Space EP
Reviewed by Dave on 4th June 2006
Dancing in Space begins with the track 'Funky Lady' and it is this track which has made the biggest impact on me. Rarely does the first track of an album, or an EP, make me think "Yes, yes this is good" it usually takes a few tracks or a few listens but the minute that 'Funky Lady' starts I was thinking to myself, "I like this, its good and its fun".
The second track 'Remedy' keeps the whole thing at the initial level set by 'Funky Lady' and Aiden really shows off his vocal talents during the chorus. My favourite track from the EP is the keyboard driven 'Sophisticated', it's a fun, fast paced song. Aiden snarls his way thorough the lyrics without ever sounding particularly 'rock' this is still soul and it is still good.
The word funky can be used to describe the whole of this EP, it is five tracks of soul, a genre that personally I do not like, but Hey Edison have taken soul in a new direction and new and gloriously fun direction.
The band are only young (Aiden being 18) but they are described on their website as having "an on-stage charisma that is mature beyond their years." I've seen them live and I agree to that whole-heartedly watching Hey Edison live is great. The BBC described them as "musical geniuses", clearly Hey Edison have potential, personally I wish them the best of luck.
A good EP from a fun and funky new band who are on the up and up, look out for them on the Nokia Stage at this years Leeds Festival. The boys are also in the running for the Road to V2006, which if they win will mean a single deal with EMI and a spot at the V Festival.
