Lowstar - Alphabet Blues

Reviewed by HelenB on 18th June 2007

I was a little worried when i first started listening to this track, as the slow music and dreary lyrics gave the impression that it was just going to be another depressing record about wallowing in self pity. After sticking with it though, I was pleased to discover that although the track is undoubtedly depressing, it's not that bad an effort.

The chorus is surprisingly innovative, and if you can forget about the subject matter of sadness and depression for a second, it's almost pleasant to listen to. The singer Ian's gentle but anxious voice has an appealing quality that really comes through when the song speeds up.

There's clearly a lot of work to be done though, before these guys are really ready to take on the music scene but they're definitely not a hopeless cause. More original lyrics might benefit them, and improving the simple guitar riffs a smidgeon might liven the song up a bit.
